How to Keep Your Eyes Safe with Safety Glasses

Safety glasses are used to protect the eyes during activities that can involve an eye injury. Safety glasses minimize injury risks during activities like sports, woodworking and some types of art–like sculpting, lampworking, quartzworking, welding or metalworking, and while on the job in industries like construction.

According to a survey, 10 to 20% of injuries occurring at work result in permanent or temporary vision loss. Therefore, there is a critical need to protect your eyes from any potential injury.

There are many Safety glasses available in the market that can protect against work hazards, including eye injuries from flying bits of glass or metal, chemicals in the air and harmful radiation.

Prescription safety glasses have become a part of the tool kit for many professionals, including the people in the construction trades (e.g. welders), and in military and law enforcement careers.

Below is a brief overview on the types of safety and recreational glasses available in the market and their use:

Driving Glasses
If your eyes are sensitive and the glare of the headlights bother you while driving at night, you should invest in driving glasses.

Clear lenses with AR Coating are one of the best options for night time driving as it minimizes internal reflections within the lenses, reducing halo problems, and increases the transmittance of light through the lens to the eye. My personal favorite general purpose lens for driving at night is our Sheer Glare peach/light beige AR coated lens. I find these to be most effective for various driving conditions. They do a much better job at eliminating a portion of the glare from the headlights than the clear ones. Yellow is another option for night driving lenses. These will sharpen and enhance your viewing area. One negative of these lenses is they give the driver a feeling of seeing better, but on the other hand, the reverse actually happens. However, there is no magic wand that can improve night time driving. Get your eyes examined regularly and wear an up-to-date prescription. If you have regular problems while driving at night, consult an ophthalmologist.

Computer Glasses
Spending a significant time on your computer? You need to have computer glasses as a protective measure to save your eyes. We carry various lens tints and Gunnar Optiks glasses for computer work. You can also get the computer lenses in reading glasses and they lessen the symptoms associated with Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

Headaches, tired eyes, burning eyes, watering eyes, itching eyes, dry eyes, double vision, blurred vision, eye fatigue, bloodshot eyes, sore eyes, irritated eyes and eye pain are some of the symptoms of CVS. Computer eye glasses relieve eye strain headaches caused by eye muscle fatigue.

Radiation Protection Glasses
Radiation Protection glasses are worn by people who are at potential risk of radiation exposure because of their specific work demands. This protective eye wear is designed for people working in X-ray labs, hospitals, etc. They shield the sensitive parts of the eye from ionizing radiation. The eyes, being the most sensitive area of the body, are most vulnerable to radiation. They should be safeguarded from damage by using high-quality lead glasses for each and every x-ray procedure. Medical facilities should take adequate steps to protect their medical personnel and patients by implementing the use of radiation glasses for hospital, dental practice and x-ray labs.

Sports Protection Glasses
There are also eye protectors used by sportsmen to protect the eye from insects, dust, wind blast, etc. Skiers should use effective sun shields to protect their eyes from UV rays from the sun. Infection control glasses can be used for protection against eye flu infections. Polarized glasses are helpful to fisherman for fishing and for outdoor water sports by reducing the reflective glare. We also carry a full line of riding glasses in polarized and non polarized lens styles.

Protective Sunglasses
People wear sunscreen to protect their skin while going out in the harsh sunlight and wearing sunglasses does the same for your eyes. Exposure to bright sunlight by the naked eye may increase the risk of developing cataracts, age related muscular degeneration and growths on the eye, including cancer.

However, not all sunglasses provide the same eye shield protection. The quality of a good sunglass should be that it blocks UV rays. Don’t be deceived by color or cost. The ability to block UV light is not dependent on the price tag or how dark the sunglass lenses are. Also, make sure the sunglasses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. They should also wrap all the way around to your temples so the sun’s rays can’t enter from the side. Even if your wear corrective lenses, it is important to protect your eyes from the suns rays.

Laser Safety Glasses
Moderate and high-power lasers are potentially hazardous because they can burn the retina of the eye. This can be prevented by wearing laser safety goggles when operating lasers. Laser safety glasses provide CE certified laser radiation protection. The comfortable frame style can be used over the top of prescription lenses and has top and side shields to protect the user’s eyes from peripheral laser radiation.

Riding Boots And Fashion

As testimonies to an age old occupation which is still fashionable, horse riding boots have a history of their own to tell. Riding footwear has been first developed for men and an entire masculine hierarchy was mirrored by these items of mens wear.

Commoners had horses as working aids, and would rarely use those to ride. Noblemen however needed riding boots to show their superior social status clearly, while still needing them to be flexible, tall, thick and insulating. The pleasure or parade riders from noblemens courts wore different boots when they were hunting or waging war.

The traditional material of which such footwear was made from was leather. Hunting took riders through dust and thorny bushes and sometimes into swamps. Hunting for food, not for pleasure, meant having to ride for long hours through difficult circumstances and in all seasons. Such footwear has become significantly taller than the knee, and laced at the back of the feet. If the boot itself was shorter, it was worn with chaps and gaiters.

Warfare used to be another activity in close connection to riding. Army riders were noblemen mostly, and their boots were a question of status as well. But wars meant having to ride at various paces with little other things to do sometimes for months. Cavalry forces had to wear uniforms, which meant that special footwear which was at the same time classy and universally easy to wear needed to be designed. The rounded or moderately sharp front design suits most kinds of toe shapes and the more or less precious finishing of the leather involved, as well as the best or less good quality leather used was made to do the rest.

So, although being a typical mens wear item that has gradually translated into the female world afterward, riding boots have always been an object of rigorous functionality standards and social concepts easy to be afterward translated in fashion. Alongside its rather stern look, fashion designers who have been attracted to this challenging footwear have added a lot of subtle elegance to it. Ladies riding boots should not at all be expected to be unisex and the exquisitely different lines of boots that top online specialized stores like BP Country supply are the best proof to that. You must remember that in the last two decades riding boots have in their turn influenced urban fashion design and browsing such collections will have you understand why.

The History Of Surf Clothing And Surfing Accessories

Back in the 1950s, surfing was an almost unknown sport. Then, in the 1960s, everything changed. Surfing captured the imagination of a new, post war generation and almost overnight, a whole new fashion crave began. Surf clothing went from being just having a pair of baggy swimming trunks to a fashion statement. What caused the change?

No, it was not the Beach Boys who first popularized surfing. In 1957, a man wrote a short book about his daughter, who was one of the first surfer girls. Called “Gidget”, the book went on to become a hit movie in 1959. That was where it all really began.

James Darren and Sandra Dee starred in the film, supported by another big star of the era, Cliff Robertson. With its stellar cast and bevies of beautiful bikini clad girls and muscle built surfers, it was a sure hit. Not only that, but it captured the imagination of a generation, all of whom wanted to be a part of free and easy surfing life.

Other movies were made and before long, groups like Jan and Dean and the Beach Boys started producing hit singles. Interestingly, real surfers hated those movies and the “surf music, ” because they liked having the waves to themselves. They preferred listening to the guitar music of the Ventures and Dick Dale and the Deltones. They would listen to driving instrumental songs like “Walk, Don’t Run” and “Perfidia” to get themselves psyched before going surfing.

There was nothing that surfers could do to stop the rise of surfing. By the sixties, surfing was on the map and everybody wanted to be a surfer. Those who lived near the beach started surfing, while those who didn’t started dressing like surfers.

Baggy Hawaiian shirts, baggy trunks and Hawaiian print bikinis were the surfing style of that era. It took time for a surfing apparel industry to evolve, but evolve it did. Today, some of the early surf wear companies are multi-million dollar corporations.

Today, you can find surfwear being worn just about anywhere in the world. It runs the gamut from board shorts and bikinis to shoes, shorts, pants, shirts and even socks. Girls styles include tank tops, blouses, skirts, miniskirts and dresses. In fact, many surfers find enough styles to choose from that they wear nothing else but surf wear.

Gidget must be proud of her legacy, but she may be bewildered, as well. How could she have imagined that surfers today enjoy million dollar contracts with surf clothing companies and are counted amongst the world’s sports superstars? Believe it or not, Gidget, that’s what’s happened!

As usual, the trend begins at the top of the tree of fashionable clothing mens names like D & G, Versace, Prada, Lang and co. have all brought their own salvation-falutin versions of this type. Filtering of the line, the best of street fashion clothing designers men took up the vibe – Bench clothing, G-star jeans, Henleys, Superdry and the rest. And all these designer clothes for men came from the same basic idea: variations on a theme to try to work hard.

But this is not just luck. Historically, fashion has always followed the economy. In the mid-nineteenth century at the height of the gold rush California, weaving hickory-shirts became popular because of their durability under very difficult working conditions for those who cannot always’ s expect high finance returns. And almost on denim hickory is favored for similar properties. Used in overalls and jeans everywhere today, it was first developed in the sixteenth century Genoa by a French family who came from the city of Nimes, where in English “de Nimes” became “denim” and “Blue Genes” became “blue jeans”. The fabric was made because the poor merchant seamen wear his favorite disc double crossover construction.

Before 1939, most silk came from Japan, but after Pearl Harbor, silk has been interrupted and nylon was developed as a cheaper alternative vital. Today, the nylon is an integral part of all types of clothing on the street jackets to the ubiquitous, always very low.

But if we talk about ‘looks’ as opposed to fabric, the new theme of the winter is at least reassuring step in the direction away from metro sexual tendencies who feel very suddenly, as if they belong to a different economic era, as the surge in sales of tights for men, or rush Beckham skirts. It is a reminder that in times of financial downturn, we need to insulate against the cold to come, and maintain a positive spirit, zip-conscious outlook.
